Sylvain Demange

Né en 1979 à Arpajon dans l’Essonne, autodidacte, Sylvain a choisi la photographie comme médium d’expression artistique.
En 2005 à l’occasion d’un séjour en Amérique du Sud Sylvain découvre l’exigence nécessaire pour mener à bien ses projets et mettre en images les sujets sur lesquels il décide de travailler. Persuadé de l’importance du travail d’auteur il est membre fondateur de l’agence Dalam crée en 2014 avec six amis photographes. En choisissant des sujets locaux Sylvain prouve son attachement à traiter sur le long terme des histoires de société qui nous sont proches. Avec «Cadets coulisses» exposé en 2015 au festival Barrobjectif, c’est la plus grande école de cirque amateur français que Sylvain nous invite à découvrir de l’intérieur. Avec «Nitescences» exposé en 2016 au festival l’Œil Urbain de Corbeil-Essonnes, Sylvain livre une étude personnelle des migrations pendulaires autour de la capitale.
Ses recherches le mènent également à l’étranger, notamment en Indonésie, où il a entreprit depuis 2014 de travailler sur l’impact des compagnies minières pour les populations locales.
The need to photograph came to Sylvain Demange during a visit to Peru in 2005.
Initially, his motivation was to bring back memories. Gradually he felt the need to spend time with people, to focus on their daily lives, to build personal relationships by offering to share their stories through the medium of photography. His empathetic photographic approach is based on the expression of personal experiences. He brings a humanistic perspective to scenes of everyday life.
Sylvain’s curiosity motivates him and he is fascinated by the discovery of different and little known worlds. He works to highlight injustices, by evoking subjects’ suffering and their exclusion in our society.
Among other projects, he has documented the difficulties of traditional fishermen facing the fishing industry and the struggle for dignity of people in situations of exclusion caused by the current housing rights in France.
